Pinus Pentaphylla with informal upright style
Whether native or imported varieties, Pines occupy first place among the most popular species as bonsai. It is a very long-lived plant that has proven that it can live, cultivated as bonsai, for hundreds of years. For many enthusiasts it has certainly been the first approach to the art of bonsai. There are several styles indicated for Pines: bunjin, formal and informal upright, sloping, semi-cascade and cascade; however, it also adapts to other forms, which can sometimes appear less natural. As it grows older, the peculiarities of this plant are accentuated: the bark cracks and becomes more and more interesting, the vegetation is enriched by defining splendid palisades, etc. Thanks to the typical longevity, also guaranteed by the great resistance of pines to climatic and environmental adversities, there are spectacular specimens that, especially in the home of bonsai, Japan, are handed down from generation to generation, writing their own history.
