DESCRIPTION

A specimen bonsai of Pinus pentaphylla (five-needle pine), an evergreen conifer highly prized in the art of bonsai for its elegant form and hardiness. Its needles grow in clusters of five and are bluish-green in colour. In spring, the new shoots appear in a bright light green, whilst in the colder seasons the foliage takes on cooler, silvery hues, further enhancing the bonsai’s charm. In spring, it develops small yellowish male cones and female cones which, over time, develop into small ornamental pine cones. As it ages, the bark of this species cracks, becoming increasingly interesting. The shari style (Sharimiki) features visible jin on the branches and shari on the trunk, giving the plant an air of antiquity and strength. This style blends living and dead wood, highlighting the plant’s resilience and beauty. Cultivated in an oval, unglazed stoneware pot, which enhances the rustic character of the trunk and creates a contrast with the bright green of the needles.

Watering

Always respect the dry and wet cycles: whenever the soil feels dry to the touch, water abundantly. Then wait for the soil to dry before watering again in the same way.

Repotting

Repot young specimens about every 3 years, and more mature ones every 5-7 years. The best time to do this is between the end of winter and the beginning of spring, when the buds are swollen but the needles have not yet opened.
