Pinus pentaphylla – Five-needle pine – 59 cm

A bonsai specimen of Pinus pentaphylla (five-needle pine), an evergreen conifer highly prized in the art of bonsai for its elegant form and hardiness. Its needles grow in clusters of five and are bluish-green in colour. In spring, the new shoots appear in a bright light green, whilst in the colder seasons the foliage takes on cooler, silvery hues, further enhancing the bonsai’s charm. In spring, it develops small yellowish male cones and female cones which, over time, turn into small ornamental pine cones. As it ages, the bark of this species cracks, becoming increasingly interesting. It is styled as a ‘Kabudachi’ (stump-style), in which the trunks grow from the same base with a single root system, effectively making them a single tree. It is grown in a round, unglazed stoneware pot, which highlights the rustic character of the trunk and creates a contrast with the bright green of the needles.
