The bonsai of Elaeagnus pungens (silverthorn), an evergreen fruit tree, is prized for its hardiness, vigor, and deep green leathery leaves. It blooms in autumn (September-November) with small fragrant white flowers. In spring (March-May) it produces decorative oval red berries that add a touch of color and natural elegance to the foliage. The sinuous trunk adds movement and depth. The nebari, with its exposed roots, gives the plant stability and balance. Grown in an oval cream glazed stoneware pot, it adds elegance and highlights the deep green foliage.
Grow the bonsai outdoors all year round, taking care to place it in a sheltered spot during the colder months and in partial shade during the warmer months.
Always respect the dry and wet cycles: whenever the soil feels dry to the touch, water abundantly. Then wait for the soil to dry before watering again in the same way.
