A Japanese garden plant (Niwaki) of Pinus pentaphylla (five-needle pine), an evergreen conifer, highly prized for its elegant form and hardiness. Its needles grow in clusters of five and are bluish-green in colour. In spring, the new shoots are a bright light green, whilst in the colder seasons the foliage takes on cooler, silvery hues. In spring, it develops small, yellowish male cones and female cones which, over time, develop into small ornamental pine cones. As it ages, the bark of this species cracks, becoming increasingly interesting. Styled in an informal upright style (Moyogi), it features a vigorous, sinuous trunk with natural movement, which winds upwards supporting clusters of dense, compact needles arranged asymmetrically to form a harmonious, conical silhouette. Grown in a round, unglazed stoneware pot.
