Working plant of Carpinus betulus frans fontaine (hornbeam), deciduous variety, is prized for its pale bark and bright green serrated leaves. The foliage turns golden yellow to brownish orange in autumn and sheds its leaves in winter, giving it a very decorative appearance. In spring, flowers may appear in the form of pendulous inflorescences called catkins: the male catkins are longer and more showy, while the female catkins are smaller and more inconspicuous. Following flowering, small winged fruits develop in clusters; they are decorative but not particularly showy. It is a growing and shaping plant. Cultivated in a square black plastic pot.
Grow bonsai outdoors all year round, taking care to place it in a sheltered spot during the colder months and in partial shade during the warmer months.
Always respect the dry and wet cycles: whenever the soil feels dry to the touch, water it thoroughly. Then wait for the soil to dry out before watering again in the same way.
