Acer palmatum Nomura bonsai, a deciduous species, prized for its elegant habit and variability of foliage throughout the seasons. The leaves have delicately serrated margins; in spring they are bright red in colour, in summer they turn slightly darker shades of bronze-green, while in autumn they give spectacular deep red and orange colours. It sheds its leaves in winter, leaving the structure of the branches to emerge. In spring it may produce small, inconspicuous purple-red flowers, followed in summer by the characteristic winged fruits called samare, which are light and decorative and ripen until autumn. The bonsai is grown in a rectangular cream enamelled stoneware pot that contrasts with the bright colour of the foliage.
Protect the foliage from the intense summer sun, while exposing it to the sun in autumn to intensify the color of the leaves. In winter, it is best to protect the root system from frost, especially when grown in very shallow pots or with exposed roots.
Always respect the dry and wet cycles: whenever the soil feels dry to the touch, water abundantly. Then wait for the soil to dry before watering again in the same way.
