Fagus sylvatica – Beech – 65 cm

A Fagus sylvatica (beech) bonsai, a deciduous species prized for the extraordinary harmony of its form, its smooth, pearl-grey bark and its velvety, lanceolate foliage in intense shades of brown and purple. The bright ruby-red foliage, soft and lustrous, takes on deeper shades ranging from bronze to mahogany during the summer, before transforming into warm copper and burnished red tones in the autumn. It sheds its leaves in winter, but retains great ornamental appeal thanks to the light silhouette of its fine branching and the fact that some dry leaves may remain elegantly on the branches, a feature much appreciated in mature beech trees. In spring, it produces small, inconspicuous flowers, from which the typical beechnuts may develop, small triangular fruits enclosed in a spiny husk, although fruiting is rare in bonsai and occurs mainly in more mature specimens. Cultivated in the forest style (Yose-ue), with three plants of different heights to lend balance and depth to the composition. The round dark brown plastic pot enhances the plant, whilst offering practicality, lightness and durability for optimal cultivation.
