A Carpinus betulus (hornbeam) bonsai, of the deciduous variety, is prized for its elegance and its bright green, serrated leaves. The foliage turns a colour ranging from golden yellow to brownish orange in autumn and is shed in winter, giving it a very decorative appearance. In spring, flowers may appear in the form of pendulous inflorescences known as catkins: the male catkins are longer and more showy, whilst the female ones are smaller and more discreet. Following flowering, small winged fruits develop in clusters; these are decorative but not particularly showy. It is grown in a dark brown-to-black rectangular plastic pot, which showcases the trunk and foliage whilst offering practicality, lightness and durability for optimal cultivation.
Grow bonsai outdoors all year round, taking care to place it in a sheltered spot during the colder months and in partial shade during the warmer months.
