Ostria carpinifolia (black hornbeam) bonsai, a deciduous variety, prized for its hardiness, its bark which develops character over the years, and its dense, harmonious foliage. In spring, the crown produces bright light-green leaves which, as the season progresses, turn a deep green. In autumn, the foliage turns splendid shades of golden yellow before falling completely during the winter. In spring, between April and May, it produces small flowers clustered in catkins, which are unobtrusive yet distinctive. In late summer, the characteristic pendulous infructescences appear, resembling small bunches of hops, adding further ornamental interest to the plant. Grown in a round black plastic Air Pot, this is a solution designed to promote vigorous and healthy root growth. The unique perforated structure improves oxygenation of the roots and encourages denser, more uniform branching, fostering the development of a stronger, more balanced plant.
Grow bonsai outdoors all year round, taking care to place it in a sheltered spot during the colder months and in partial shade during the warmer months.
Always respect the dry and wet cycles: whenever the soil feels dry to the touch, water it thoroughly. Then wait for the soil to dry out before watering again in the same way.
