Four species are ascribed to the genus Hamamelis, of which Hamemelis japonica is native to the mountainous areas of Japan and China. Belonging to the Hamamelidaceae family, Hamemelis japonica usually has a shrub or small tree form with short petiolate, deciduous, alternate, oval leaves. It is particularly prized for its pale, fragrant winter flowers, which it surprisingly emits in mid-winter, even in very cold temperatures. In autumn it is appreciated for its leaves that turn red-orange before falling. It prefers sunny locations: direct sunlight favours more abundant flowering.
