A Pinus thunbergii (black pine) bonsai, an evergreen conifer that is hardy and highly prized in the art of bonsai for its rough bark and vigorous needles. The foliage is dense and consists of long, slender, double needles of a bright green colour. It has a trunk with mature, rough bark, which cracks as it ages, becoming increasingly interesting. It features a stump-style (Kabudachi) form, in which all the trunks grow from the same base with a single root system, effectively making them a single tree. It is grown in a round, unglazed stoneware pot, which enhances the colour contrast and brings out the natural beauty of the bonsai.
Grow bonsai outdoors all year round in a well-ventilated area, taking care to place it in a sheltered spot during the colder months and in partial shade during the warmer months.
Always respect the dry and wet cycles: whenever the soil feels dry to the touch, water abundantly. Then wait for the soil to dry before watering again in the same way.

Repot young specimens about every 3 years, and more mature ones every 5-7 years. The best time to do this is between the end of winter and the beginning of spring, when the buds are swollen but the needles have not yet opened.
