Pinus thunbergii kotobuki – Black pine – 41 cm
A Pinus thunbergii ‘Kotobuki’ bonsai, measuring 34 cm in height (excluding the pot), with a trunk diameter of 2 cm and a nebari of 8 cm. The plant is grown in an oval, unglazed stoneware pot measuring 20 x 15.5 x H7 cm.
A Pinus thunbergii ‘Kotobuki’ (black pine) bonsai, a robust evergreen conifer much prized in the art of bonsai for its rough bark and vigorous needles. The foliage is dense and consists of long, slender, dark green double needles. It features a trunk with mature, rough bark, which cracks as it ages, becoming increasingly interesting. It is styled with exposed roots (Neagari), where the roots emerge from the soil, merging with the trunk to create a dynamic and natural composition. Cultivated in an oval, unglazed stoneware pot, this highlights the contrast with the intense green of the bonsai’s needles.
Grow bonsai outdoors all year round in a well-ventilated area, taking care to place it in a sheltered spot during the colder months and in partial shade during the warmer months.
Always respect the dry and wet cycles: whenever the soil feels dry to the touch, water abundantly. Then wait for the soil to dry before watering again in the same way.

Fertilize from spring to fall, avoiding the hottest months of July/August. Use an organic, liquid, or solid fertilizer.

Repot young specimens about every 3 years, and more mature ones every 5-7 years. The best time to do this is between the end of winter and the beginning of spring, when the buds are swollen but the needles have not yet opened.
