The Eleagnum, frequently cultivated in bonsai form, is popular not only as a fruit species, but also for its high bonsai potential. There are several species, which ripen their fruit from late spring to autumn and all of them are splendid training material. Of these, Elaeagnus pungens is robust and easy to train. If one considers the leaves, the fruits, the trunk, everything makes it a particularly suitable species for being made into a bonsai. Generally if you ask an amateur why he does not grow Eleagnus pungens, the most frequent answer refers to the difficulty of seeing them in fruit. However, they are trees with spectacular characteristics, such as the bark turning almost black as they mature, and if cared for properly, they also give great satisfaction in fruiting. In bonsai art, the styles they are best suited to are: informal upright, inclined, prostrate and cascading.
