Punica granatum nejikan – Pomegranate – 66 cm

The Punica granatum nejikan (pomegranate) bonsai, a deciduous fruit-bearing species, is an ornamental variety particularly prized in the world of bonsai for its characteristic sinuous trunk, which combines elegance, hardiness and spectacular seasonal colour. The leaves, small and lanceolate, appear in spring as highly decorative reddish-bronze young shoots; they are bright green during the growing season, before taking on warm golden-yellow hues in autumn before falling. During winter, it sheds its leaves completely, highlighting the elegant structure of the trunk and branches. Between late spring and summer, it may produce elegant reddish-orange flowers with a typical bell-shaped form, which are highly ornamental and decorative. After flowering, small fruits resembling miniature pomegranates may appear, ripening towards the end of summer or the start of autumn, adding further charm to the plant. Styled in the informal upright style (Moyogi), with a sinuous and dynamic trunk featuring rough bark that conveys a sense of naturalness and balance, evoking the spontaneous growth of trees in the wild and lending movement and depth to the composition. Grown in a cream-coloured, glazed stoneware oval pot, it creates an elegant contrast with the bright green of the leaves and the fruits, making the bonsai a sophisticated decorative feature for both indoors and outdoors.
