The species commonly found in Italy is Schinus molle, also known as Falsopepe and, indeed, the Pepper Tree. Morphologically, it is a fast-growing, weeping evergreen tree. In the wild, it can reach 8 metres in both height and width. Its leaves resemble those of ferns, consisting of numerous narrow, lanceolate, glossy, deep green leaflets. From late winter through to summer, it produces clusters of tiny, open yellow flowers, followed by pea-sized, fuchsia-red fruits that gradually take on the classic dark hue of pepper. It is highly prized in bonsai cultivation thanks to the harmony of its proportions; furthermore, its tiny, deep-green leaves and distinctive bark – which give it a mature appearance even at a young age – contribute to making it a species particularly well-suited to the art of bonsai. The styles to which it is best suited are the rock-style and the informal upright style.
