The shohin bonsai of Pinus thunbergii (black pine), an evergreen conifer, is robust and highly prized for its rough bark and vigorous needles. The foliage is dense and consists of double, long, thin, bright green needles. It has a sinuous and natural trunk that gives it a dynamic appearance. The mature, rough bark cracks with age, becoming increasingly interesting. Cultivated in a rectangular unglazed stoneware pot, it enhance the color contrast and enhances the natural aesthetics of the bonsai.
Grow bonsai outdoors all year round in a well-ventilated area, taking care to place it in a sheltered spot during the colder months and in partial shade during the warmer months.
Always respect the dry and wet cycles: whenever the soil feels dry to the touch, water abundantly. Then wait for the soil to dry before watering again in the same way.

Repot young specimens about every 3 years, and more mature ones every 5-7 years. The best time to do this is between the end of winter and the beginning of spring, when the buds are swollen but the needles have not yet opened.
