Pinus pentaphylla – Five-needle pine – 13 cm

A Shohin bonsai of Pinus pentaphylla (five-needle pine), an evergreen conifer highly prized in the art of bonsai for its elegant form and hardiness. Its needles grow in clusters of five and are bluish-green in colour. In spring, the new shoots appear in a bright light green, whilst in the colder seasons the foliage takes on cooler, silvery hues, further enhancing the bonsai’s charm. In spring, it develops small yellowish male cones and female cones which, over time, turn into small ornamental pine cones. As it ages, the bark of this species cracks, becoming increasingly interesting. The cascading style (Kengai) is characterised by branches that extend downwards in a fluid and harmonious manner, creating a beautiful sense of movement. When grown in an unglazed square stoneware pot, it highlights the rustic character of the trunk and creates a contrast with the bright green of the needles.
Grow bonsai outdoors all year round in a well-ventilated area, taking care to place it in a sheltered spot during the colder months and in partial shade during the warmer months.
Always respect the dry and wet cycles: whenever the soil feels dry to the touch, water abundantly. Then wait for the soil to dry before watering again in the same way.

Repot young specimens about every 3 years, and more mature ones every 5-7 years. The best time to do this is between the end of winter and the beginning of spring, when the buds are swollen but the needles have not yet opened.
