To make the bonsai take the desired shape, the wire is applied. As this technique generally takes a long time, the wire will remain wrapped around the plant for several months. It is therefore essential to use specific bonsai wire such as copper wire if you do not want to cause damage to the bark of branches and trunk. This has several advantages: a dark, opaque colouring, which allows the wire to be camouflaged on the plant, and a certain stiffness of the material which, while being more demanding during the wrapping operation, also perfectly maintains the desired position of branches and trunk over time. For winding to be effective, it is recommended to use a wire 1/3 the thickness of the branch or trunk to be wound.
