A shohin bonsai of Serissa japonica (serissa), also known as the ‘tree of a thousand stars’, is an evergreen suitable for outdoor cultivation and is prized for the abundant white and lilac star-shaped flowers it produces in late spring and summer. Its flowers create an elegant contrast with the foliage and give the bonsai a light and striking appearance. Its foliage is characterised by small green leaves during the growing season, which retain more intense shades in the cooler months. It features a stump-style (Kabudachi) arrangement in which all the trunks grow from the same base with a single root system, making them, to all intents and purposes, a single tree. Grown in a blue glazed stoneware ‘cloud’ pot, this helps to emphasise the bonsai’s aesthetic, whilst maintaining a delicate contrast with the deep green of the leaves.
