Bonsai are living organisms and each one is unique, so the plant you receive will be very similar to, but not identical to, the one shown in the photograph. The height may vary as the plant grows.
The species most commonly used in bonsai cultivation are Malus evereste, sieboldii and Malus halliana. The second has a distinctive mottled bark, fine, rather stiff purple-coloured branches and flowers in spring at the tips of the branches; among its various characteristics, it is certainly its fine branching that makes it ideal as a bonsai. The third, Malus halliana, has been particularly prized in China since ancient times as a flowering tree: it too has fine branching and a distinctive smooth, grey bark. One of the main advantages of these species for bonsai cultivation is their rapid growth, which allows for the production of fine specimens within a few years. The styles to which they are best suited are the informal upright or slanting styles.
