Suiseki (水石) is a Japanese art dedicated to the contemplation and appreciation of natural stones that evoke shapes or landscapes. The word "suiseki" literally means "water stone" (水 = water, 石 = stone), but the term refers more broadly to the collection and display of stones that evoke images of mountains, hills, rivers, or other natural elements.
Suiseki stones are often displayed in a container, such as a wooden base, a flat stone, or a suiban, and may be accompanied by a minimalist composition of other natural elements, such as moss or sand, to emphasize the aesthetics of the stone itself or inserted into a composition with bonsai and kakejiku.
