University of Bonsai, Level 1 2026
The Level 1 course at the University of Bonsai takes place at the Parabiago campus. Led by Master Naoki Maeoka, it is divided into four sessions (one weekend per season), addressing the various seasonal challenges by applying specific bonsai techniques. The course also covers the aesthetic aspects of bonsai display, the historical and cultural background that has shaped the evolution of the art of bonsai, with in-depth study of general botany and plant pathology. The theoretical component is complemented by practical work on plants provided by the University, covering the various stages of studying, training and maintaining bonsai, as well as an analysis of the characteristics of different species and styling techniques.

• Dates for 2027: 1st session: 30–31 January; 2nd session: 27–28 February; 3rd session: 15–16 May; 4th session: 25–26 September.
• The course fee includes: 48 hours of tuition (theory and practice), support from the three tutors (in addition to Master Naoki Maeoka, Gian Andrea Zangherini, the Master’s assistant, and Dr Andrea Tovaglieri for botany), 3 bonsai to work on during the course , which remain the property of each student, some of the consumables required for the work; handouts on bonsai techniques, botany and plant pathology, as well as a ring binder, note-taking materials and a tool case.
